Pope Kicks off Holy Land Journey

In March 2000, Pope John Paul II made a historic visit to the Holy Land to honor the coming of the third millennium of Christendom. He walked in the footsteps of Jesus, and spoke to the masses who know the sites themselves. But he also met with Israeli, Palestinian and Jordanian leaders, and made a historic gesture to Jews in Jerusalem.

Pope John Paul II finished his visit to Mount Nebo by climbing on a platform at St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Here, the pontiff looks across the Jordan Valley to Jerusalem and Bethlem as a Franciscan monk points out the Dead Sea and Israel.
